Recent versions of the FORTRAN standard allow a more precise control of the name mangling of FORTRAN functions which could be used to circumvent this issue. Another solution is that FORTRAN implementations can be used using a C wrapper, which is quite feasible but this requires some advanced knowledge of C and FORTRAN interfacing.
